Annotation fThe 'Kurische Nehrung' is a very stretched peninsula in eastern Europe. Located on the Southeastern shore of the Baltic Sea, it measures 100 kilometres in length. And just a few hundred metres in width, all the way down.
Despite being Lituanian in its North and Russian in its South, this stretch of land is mostly remembered by its German name. Up to 1945 it used to be German territory.
Through the ages the 'Kurische Nehrung' has been famous for its unique landscape of dunes, forests and beaches. Many of these dunes consist of bare sand, continuingly re-shaping themselves by the force of the wind. Standing op top, you see the Baltic glitter in the west. The other side shows the 'Haff', a quieter stretch of sea not far away.
The sounds of the wind, the sea-birds and the waves are all around. The skies above are wide and open. Visiting this place makes you loose contact with all dimensions you are used to in life. An experience you're bound to take to your grave.
Being there myself in 1993, I can testify how this book's photos magnificently capture the spirit of this land. I never saw anything better on the subject. The photographer is Antanas Sutkus (born in 1939), a Lithuanian whose reputation stretches far beyond the borders of his country. A true artist, originating from eastern Europe - a part of the world renowned for its excellent photographers. (Amazon)
